Sunstar optioned the rights to LION and partnered with Academy Award winning production company See-Saw Films, to produce this remarkable story. See-Saw Films producers Emile Sherman and lain Canning won the Oscar for THE KING'S  SPEECH.

LION is adapted from the novel “A Long Way Home” by Saroo Brierley and Larry Buttrose. It is about a five-year-old  Indian boy who is lost on the  unforgiving  streets  of  Calcutta, thousands of miles away from home and family. He survives many challenges before being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, armed with only the scantest of clues, he learns of a new technology called Google Earth, and sets out to find his lost  family. It is a story of courage, inspiration and most importantly to never let go of what drives the human spirit – hope.


The story has captured worldwide attention, his story having been told in various media outlets such as CNN, BBC, AP, Vanity Fair, The Hollywood Reporter and on 60 Minutes Australia. Watch it here.


LION has an all-star cast featuring Nicole Kidman, Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and David Wenham. The hugely talented Garth Davis is Director and Luke Davies wrote the screenplay.


The Weinstein Company (TWC) have all international distribution rights. LION was released in the USA by TWC in December, 2016. Transmission released LION in Australia on 19 January, 2017 and it went straight to #1.


LION has been nominated for 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture.

The Weinstein Company have acquired the International Distribution rights for all markets besides Australia & NZ at the Cannes Film Festival for $12M USD. The media release can be found here.
